Prof. Girish Agrawal, IRMA, Anand (ICSD 2014) shared with the house a case on Hydel Power Project on Bhagirathi River established by one of the largest PSU in the area of Thermal Power. Himalayas was being blasted to build an 18 KM tunnel to bring water for Turbines for a 600 MW Power Station. The project was promoted stating that 231 jobs for local people in 6 villages would be created. Due to the intervention of Hon. Supreme Court of India the project was closed down in 2010. An investment of around Rs. 800 Crores was made in this project. There was a shift in the agricultural pattern of the area. The traditional practices were abandoned. The natural water bodies in this region of Himalayas got dried up. People living in the area since 200 years started migrating. However on pen and paper the business house reflected that they were doing very good CSR but the scenario on the ground is very bad. Porter's “Shared Value” concept was also discussed. Productivity in value chain has to be seen along with integration of environment and societal concerns to have economic value or else it will bring about economic problem.
