In celebration of the Marine Band's 215th anniversary, John Williams, the Academy Award-winning composer and conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, conducted the band in a fanfare he wrote specifically for the ensemble's anniversary. The work is aptly titled "For 'The President's Own.'" On July 3, 2013, the band rehearsed with Mr. Williams and recorded the new band work. Following the recording session, Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn talked with Mr. Williams about the piece and his experience working with "The President's Own." Williams has a special relationship with "The President's Own," having conducted the group on its 2003 and 2008 anniversary concerts in Washington, D.C., and in 2009 during a tour concert at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents John Williams' "For 'The President's Own'". Directed by Lt. Col. Jason K. Fettig. From "Be Glad Then, America," released 2014. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ Download the CD booklet: http://www.marineband.marines.mil/Portals/175/Docs/Audio/Educational_Series/be_glad_then_america/CD30_be_glad_then_america_web_booklet.pdf Listen to entire CD: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA7no0L9zTk4GlDO7pIl8-EwkEzwYHs3c The work of John Williams has become an important part of the American musical lexicon, and has proliferated popular culture across the globe on a scale that is arguably unlike any composer since John Philip Sousa. His music for film, television, and the concert stage as well as countless significant national and international events has played a major role in defining the most recent chapter in the evolution of the “American sound.” Williams was born in Queens, N.Y., in 1932. The son of a jazz drummer, he studied piano and composition at the University of California, Los Angeles. After a three-year enlistment as a musician in the Air Force, he continued his study at The Juilliard School while moonlighting as a jazz and studio pianist in New York City. He had established a successful career composing for television when he met an ambitious young director named Steven Spielberg in 1974, and the two began one of the most incredible artistic partnerships in modern filmmaking. That year, they collaborated on a film called "The Sugarland Express" starring Goldie Hawn and a year later teamed up again for "Jaws," which garnered the 1976 Academy Award for best original score. Williams ranks among the most honored film composers of all time, with five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, 21 GRAMMY awards, and seven British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. In addition to his multiple wins, his forty-nine Oscar nominations are the most ever achieved by a living person. Williams’ close relationship with the Marine Band began in 2003, when he accepted an invitation to conduct the ensemble in a gala concert of his music given at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in celebration of the organization’s 205th anniversary. He returned for an encore performance in 2008, and the band was also chosen by the composer to perform for him when he received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2004. In 2013, Williams graciously penned his first original work for winds in more than four decades as a token of esteem for “The President’s Own” and in celebration of the Marine Band’s 215th anniversary. Generously named for the ensemble by the composer, the piece combines virtuosic, intertwining lines with a series of playful themes and bright fanfares that brilliantly capture the many colors and textures of Williams’ inimitable music.

For centuries “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band has honored Presidents with ‘Hail to the Chief,” music indelibly associated with America’s Commander in Chief. Used to herald the arrival of the President, this piece also is performed at the ceremony to honor the newly inaugurated President immediately after he has taken the oath of office. Though the Marine Band performs “Hail to the Chief” hundreds of times each year for the Chief Executive, the song did not originate as a Presidential salute. Composed as a stage adaptation of Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake, “Hail to the Chief” is attributed to English composer James Sanderson. The melody was based on an old Gaelic air, and the song was first performed in the United States in 1812. It was not until 1829 that the first documented performance of the music in the presence of the President of the United States occurred. On May 29, 1829, the Marine Band performed at the ceremony celebrating the laying of the cornerstone for the first lock on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. As President Andrew Jackson departed the ceremony, the Marine Band performed "Hail to the Chief" in his honor. Newspapers reported that the music elicited three spontaneous outbursts of acclamation for the President from the crowd in attendance. Two First Ladies are credited with first instructing the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” at a Presidential appearance. Julia Tyler, the vivacious young second wife of President John Tyler, was an amateur composer. The Tylers entertained frequently and it was at these parties that she reportedly asked the Marine Band to announce the President’s arrival by performing “Hail to the Chief.” First Lady Sara Polk is also credited with using “Hail to the Chief” to announce the arrival of the President. President James. K. Polk was an unassuming man of slight stature, and his arrival at large functions frequently went unnoticed. To avoid this embarrassment, Mrs. Polk reportedly asked the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” to announce him. Over the years this tradition continued, and in 1954 the Department of Defense established an official policy making “Hail to the Chief” a musical tribute to the President of the United States. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ After the widespread success of his operetta El Capitan, Sousa regrettably declined an offer of $100,000 for The Bride Elect, from which this march was extracted. The operetta soon passed from the musical scene, but the march was a favorite of bandsmen for many years to come. The march was pieced together from various sections of the operetta. The principal theme was developed from the song, “Unchain the Dogs of War,” which ended Act II. The march was sometimes programmed by the Sousa Band under that title. According to Frank Simon, cornetist of the Sousa Band from 1914 to 1920, “The Bride Elect” was among Sousa’s own favorites. He once referred to it as the best march he had ever written. Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 44. Used by permission.
