! And if this were to happen it would seriously disenfranchise many thousands of voters with a significant impact on the outcome of the election. I'm investigating this further and I'm making contact with the commissioner of elections to see what can be done to ensure that people are able to exercise their votes." 7. Bus pulling in 8. Counting was expected to begin on Wednesday night in peaceful areas but political party leaders had yet to decide what to do about districts where armed gangs, blockades and ballot stuffing interfered with the election for the 225-seat Parliament. At least four deaths in political violence occurred during Wednesday's vote. The death toll since campaigning began on October 21 climbed past 50, said independent poll observers, who called for revotes in areas affected by violence. Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that a report of high turnout in the elections was good news for his United National Front party because uncommitted voters are "voting for a change." The key issues for the 12.4 (m) million eligible voters were the sinking economy and the 18-year separatist war that has killed more than 64 thousand. The government wants to intensify the war, while the opposition said it would pursue peace talks with the rebels who are fighting to carve a separate Tamil homeland out of this Indian Ocean island nation of 18.6 (m) million people. The army said it blockaded roads in the north and east that tens of thousands of Tamils would have used to reach polling stations because of intelligence reports that rebels from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), usually known as the Tamil Tigers, intended to mix with the would-be voters and disrupt elections. "This decision will disenfranchise many thousands of voters, which I believe will have a significant impact on the outcome in these electoral districts," said John Cushnahan, the British head of a 48-member team of European Union observers. Local candidates and election officials in the Tamil areas said 130 thousand people were affected by the blockade, while the national Election Commission estimated 80 thousand Tamils were kept from voting.
