He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands A Basket of Blessings Some time ago, a family was going through a challenging time. Their world seemed to crumble around them, and all of their attention and energy was consumed in their problems. Recognizing that this was not how they wanted to live their lives, they decided to turn to heaven for help. That’s when a miracle happened. No, their problems didn’t disappear. Rather, a good friend of the family helped them see that they had what she called a “basket” of blessings—and it was “overflowing.” The mother of the family said: “We realized that we were surrounded by goodness and were being cheered on from every side. We began as a family to express our gratitude to each other as well as to the Lord daily.” So each night the family would gather to talk about the blessings that they noticed had been added to their basket that day. “The more we expressed gratitude,” the mother observed, “the more there was to be grateful for.” Challenges became more manageable as they recognized that God had been close by all along. We all have a “basket of blessings,” though we don’t always remember to look inside it. There are blessings—large and small—all around us, even when it seems that blessings are hard to come by. Very often, our basket fills most quickly with small and simple blessings: a beautiful day, a kind word, a good friend, a loving family, a smile, or something that makes us smile. This season of Thanksgiving might be a good time to notice these blessings. Doing so could inspire us to be more intentional about expressing gratitude to the Lord and to countless others who bless our lives. And it might lead us to share our abundance with others, especially with those whose basket may not be quite as full. As we “live in thanksgiving daily,” we will find that our basket of blessings truly is overflowing, and our outlook on life will improve in all of the most important ways. Episode 4601. Music and the Spoken Word broadcast with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. View the individual tracks here: https://bit.ly/2T0FS1y 1. America, the Dream Goes On 2. Our God Is Marching On 3. Semper Fidelis March (Organ Solo) 4. This Is My Country 5. In Tribute to Our Veterans (Spoken Word) 6. Because of the Brave 7. Battle Hymn of the Republic In Tribute to Our Veterans On Veterans Day, we give thanks to everyone who has ever donned a uniform of the United States military. This national holiday dates to the close of the First World War and now honors generations of veterans who have fought in many battles in many lands. No matter the conflict, our military men and women of different backgrounds, races, and creeds have long represented the American character at its best: selflessness, honesty, commitment, grit, resilience, and patriotism. There are so many inspiring stories that could be told of these valiant veterans. One story that captures their spirit of sacrifice comes from John Whitehead. In 1941, John was a student working in the library at Haverford College when he heard about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He knew immediately that his “life would never be the same.” John became a Navy supply officer and was assigned to command five landing craft during the invasion of the Normandy beaches on D-Day—a pivotal moment of the war. John and his infantrymen, whom he called “the real heroes,” made two trips across the channel from Portsmouth, England, and after the second he noted, “What had looked like such a disaster only a few hours earlier was beginning to look like it had a chance.” As the men scrambled ashore, John paused and “took a few deep breaths and felt suddenly elated, proud to be having a tiny part in what was maybe the biggest battle of all history.” Yes, he was “soaked to the skin, seasick, dead tired, cold, [and] still scared,” but as he would later declare, “I would not have wanted to be anywhere else.” What was it that made John Whitehead feel elated in such miserable, exhausting, dangerous conditions? It was the cause for which he was fighting. To honor the sacrifices of people like John, we build memorials, hold parades, and give awards. But such things cannot fully do justice to their service or repay our debt. Maybe the best way to honor our veterans is to stay true to the cause that inspired them—the cause of justice, truth, and freedom. Episode 4600. Aired on November 12, 2017.

Capping off an intense week of multiple recording sessions inside the historic Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Andrea Bocelli and David Foster joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for a few hours this month (see video below). "The Lord's Prayer," featuring Andrea Bocelli, the choir and orchestra, and David Foster at the organ will be part of a PBS Christmas special produced by WNET. After several takes, David Foster then switched to the piano to accompany both the choir and orchestra for "The Prayer," a song he personally composed, which will be featured in an upcoming choir and orchestra recording. Between takes of the recording process, Bocelli sat down at the Tabernacle's famous pipe organ and gave an impromptu recital of "Ave Maria" while accompanying himself. "It was beautiful; his sweet voice carried throughout the Tabernacle," said choir member Robb Cundick, who also said the unplanned performance was his favorite part of the afternoon. After the conclusion of "The Lord's Prayer," Bocelli said he had enjoyed his day in Salt Lake as well as singing in the Tabernacle. He complimented the Tabernacle acoustics and said that the entire experience was very moving. "For me it was a huge experience," Bocelli said. "The quality of the choir is very high. ... The orchestra also (is) very inspiring."

For the story behind this song: https://youtu.be/JD9CkkjACjE The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform Mack Wilberg's arrangement of "It Is Well with My Soul," by Philip P. Bliss. Life can be so unpredictable—joys and sorrows, beautiful blessings and distressing difficulties, can come unexpectedly. Our life’s dreams and plans can change in an instant. We all know this to be true. So how can we find peace amid such turbulence? Horatio Spafford knew something about life’s unexpected challenges. He was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford’s precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: “Saved alone. What shall I do?” Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll— Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know It is well, it is well with my soul. Perhaps we cannot always say that everything is well in all aspects of our lives. There will always be storms to face, and sometimes there will be tragedies. But with faith in a loving God and with trust in His divine help, we can confidently say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.” Episode 4580. Aired June 25, 2017.

On January 20, 1981, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States of America. During the inaugural parade, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang a spirited rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” while President Reagan, First Lady Nancy Reagan, and their family watched from the stands of the presidential review box. The Choir performed while aboard a 70-foot parade float, which stopped in front of the box at the request of Nancy Reagan. President Reagan was clearly moved by the Choir’s performance, and following the performance he said, “The Choir’s singing was a highlight of our inauguration, as we knew it would be. I’m sure I speak for all Americans when I say thank you for saying so well what all of us feel about this land of the free and home of the brave. There is no more inspirational moment for any American—and that includes Ronald Reagan—than to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing ‘Glory, glory, hallelujah, His truth is marching on.’”
