A book by retired Canadian investigator Larry Vance claims the pilot of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 deliberately crashed into the Indian Ocean in an apparent pre-planned mass murder-suicide. It contradicts the theory of Australian air safety investigators, who believe the jet crashed into the water after it ran out of fuel, its pilots incapacitated. »»» Subscribe to The National to watch more videos here: https://www.youtube.com/user/CBCTheNational?sub_confirmation=1 Voice Your Opinion & Connect With Us Online: The National Updates on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thenational The National Updates on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CBCTheNational »»» »»» »»» »»» »»» The National is CBC Television's flagship news program. 16 months after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished, a piece of an aircraft has been found on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. French officials are examining it, and the airline itself says it is too early to speculate on its origin. It does appear to be from the same model of plane, but other large aircraft have crashed close to the area where the wreckage appeared. Tom Bateman reports. Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN It’s a unique case in the history of modern aviation. Nearly three years after its disappearance, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, a Boeing 777 with 239 people on board, has still not been found. The official search has now been called off and no satisfactory conclusion has been reached to lessen the families’ immense pain. Some suspect the authorities are hiding the truth from them and have decided to carry out their own investigation. Our reporters followed them in their search efforts. On the night of March 7-8, 2014, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 took off from a runway in Kuala Lumpur, heading for Beijing. It was a regular scheduled flight, like thousands of others every day, with nothing special about it. On board were 12 crew members and 227 passengers, 153 of them Chinese nationals. But at 00:41 local time, as the plane prepared to enter Vietnamese airspace, all communications were cut off. The aircraft suddenly disappeared from radar screens. A few days later, the official version established that the 777 turned around, flew over the Malaysian peninsula and followed the Indonesian and Thai borders. Then, based on data provided by Inmarsat satellites, it apparently continued its path towards the south of the Indian Ocean until it ran out of fuel. According to the satellites, it eventually crashed somewhere out at sea, in a vast area off Australia. Very quickly, Malaysia, China and Australia began search operations. But the surface to be covered was huge – over 60,000 square kilometres – and the weather hostile. Radars, sonar technology and submarines were deployed for this unprecedented exploration effort. But after nearly three years of combing the seabed, no part of the Boeing has been located and almost 200 million dollars have been spent. On Tuesday January 17, Malaysia, Australia and China announced they were suspending their search, for lack of convincing results, fuelling the resentment of the families, be they Chinese, Malaysian or French. An American investigator in Madagascar Isolated and lacking official support, the relatives of the victims are clinging to a few fragile pieces of airplane debris found washed up on beaches in the Indian Ocean. In particular, fragments of a plane’s wing were found on Reunion Island in 2015 and in Tanzania the following year. Other pieces of wreckage have been recovered off Mauritius and Madagascar. There are around 30 in total, but only three of these fragments have been authenticated as belonging to the doomed Boeing. Meanwhile, the investigation entrusted to the Malaysian authorities is moving too slowly for the families’ liking. The leads first envisaged are ruled out one after the other: pilot suicide, a technical fault, a terrorist hijacking… Exasperated, the families’ representatives have now decided that they themselves will take part in the search for debris on the coasts of Madagascar, where some wreckage has already been found. In Antananarivo, the capital, they met up with an American private investigator, Blaine Gibson. For more than a year, this adventurer has decided to spend his own money to crisscross the Indian Ocean in a bid to find debris. He says he has collected around 15 pieces of wreckage just by himself. Our reporters Renaud Fessaguet and Pierre Chabert accompanied the families of victims in this hunt for debris against the odds. It's a painstaking task which may, one day, finally lead to the truth. A new report by "60 Minutes Australia" is raising the possibility that the pilot of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 crashed the plane intentionally. CBS News contributor and former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board Mark Rosenker says the idea that the pilot deliberately brought the plane down is a possibility, but the truth will never be known until the wreckage is recovered.

A piece of aircraft wreckage found in June off Tanzania has been confirmed as coming from the doomed airliner MH370, Malaysia said on Thursday. The debris, found on Pemba Island off the Tanzanian coast, is the latest piece of wreckage to be linked to the Malaysia Airlines jet, whose disappearance remains a mystery. Malaysia’s transport ministry said the piece of debris, which had been taken to Australia for expert analysis, was found to have part numbers, date stamps and other identifiers confirming it came from the Malaysia Airlines jet. After 17 days of waiting for a definitive word on the fate of those onboard the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, families of passengers were finally told on Monday that there was no longer any doubt that Flight MH370 went down in the southern Indian Ocean. Relatives of Chinese passengers in Beijing had been called to a hotel near the airport to hear the news, and some 50 of them gathered there. The statement read out by the Malaysian Prime Minister in Kuala Lumpur, was the first major step toward resolving a two-week-old mystery that has consumed the world. Afterward, relatives filed out of the Beijing conference room in grief. Medical teams were called as some of the relatives collapsed in shock. Others refused to believe what they'd been told. "The Malaysian government has been behaving in the same manner for more than ten days. We do not trust what they say," said Mrs. Hu, whose husband Zhang Zhonghai was on the flight. "We do not believe what they say, if the relatives have died we need to see their bodies to believe they are really dead," said a man, whose brother was on board the plane. The plane disappeared on March 8 on a night flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard. The larger mystery of what happened aboard the Boeing 777 to send it so off-course remains unsolved. After weeks of searching high above the ocean, the key to solving the mystery behind Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 may now lie deep underwater. At the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the experts have offered their expertise. They are preparing their unmanned submarine, the Remote Environmental Monitoring Unit, or REMUS, for a voyage in the depths of the Indian Ocean. "You want to leave no spot uncovered and nothing beats an AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) like this for covering the sea floor with unprecedented accuracy," said Dave Gallo, Director of Special Projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. If parts of the floating wreckage are found, finding key components like the black box will be another challenge. The Malaysian government has concluded that, based on satellite data analysis from British company Inmarsat, Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 ended in the Indian Ocean, there are not thought to be any survivors. (30 Jul 2018) A Malaysian-led independent investigation report released Monday more than four years after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared highlighted shortcomings in the government response and raised the "possibility of intervention by a third party." Family members of those onboard the plane said after a briefing earlier by the investigation team that they were frustrated as there were many gaps in the investigations and questions left unanswered. Sakinab Shah, sister of senior pilot Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, said she felt "relieved and happy" that Zaharie has again been cleared of blame. "But still, it cannot end here. They have to continue the search until they find the plane," she said. Officials said Monday's report is still not a final report, since the plane hasn't been found. Malaysia's government has said it is open to resume searching if credible evidence of the plane's location emerges. Investigators have no received evidence so far that two objects spotted by satellite in the Indian Ocean come from a missing passenger jet, Malaysia's Defence Minister and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Friday (March 21). Aircraft and ships are searching for objects in remote and stormy seas off Australia that Malaysia's government called a "credible lead" in the trans-continental hunt for the jetliner missing for nearly two weeks. The large objects, which Australian officials said were spotted by satellite five days ago, are the most promising find in days as searchers scour a vast area for the plane that went missing on March 8 with 239 people on board.
