US Marine Corps playlist: more at "Director of the United States Marine Band Lt. Col. William F. Santelmann provides viewers with a musical history of the Marine Band. He conducts several musical compositions from a number of time periods and showcases the antique instruments used in their performance." Produced by the US Naval Photographic Center. United States Marine Corps film MH-8058 Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). The United States Marine Band is the premier band of the United States Marine Corps. Established by act of Congress on July 11, 1798, it is the oldest of the United States military bands and the oldest professional musical organization in the United States. Today, the Marine Band also includes the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Marine Chamber Ensembles. The Marine Band is entirely separate from its sister military band, the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps ("The Commandant's Own") and the 10 active duty Marine Corps field bands. The Marine Band has been uniquely known as "The President's Own" since 1801 because of its historic connection to the President of the United States. The relationship between the Marine Band and the White House began on New Year's Day 1801, when President John Adams invited the band to perform at the Executive Mansion. Later that year, Thomas Jefferson initiated the tradition of Marine Band performances by requesting that it perform at his inauguration. The Marine Band has played at every United States presidential inauguration since. President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own" in 1801. Today, the Marine Band performs in approximately 500 events every year including state funerals, state arrival ceremonies, state dinners, parades, concerts, and other social events. The Marine Band also travels across the country each October and November during its fall concert tour, a tradition that began in 1891 under its most famous director, composer John Philip Sousa... The Marine Band recruits experienced musicians; members are selected through a rigorous audition procedure and must satisfy additional security and physical requirements to be eligible. Selected band members serve under a four-year contract as active duty enlisted Marines and are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and physical standards. They are the only members of the United States Armed Forces not required to undergo recruit training and do not perform combat missions. Also, they are not assigned to any unit other than the Marine Band. The band members start at the rank of Staff Sergeant, and wear rank insignia with a lyre replacing the normal crossed rifles. Commissioned officers are drawn from the band, although drum majors are career Marines and are selected from Fleet Marine Force bands, as they are responsible for the military development of the band's members. As of 2010, the USMC spends about $10 million annually to support the band...

For centuries “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band has honored Presidents with ‘Hail to the Chief,” music indelibly associated with America’s Commander in Chief. Used to herald the arrival of the President, this piece also is performed at the ceremony to honor the newly inaugurated President immediately after he has taken the oath of office. Though the Marine Band performs “Hail to the Chief” hundreds of times each year for the Chief Executive, the song did not originate as a Presidential salute. Composed as a stage adaptation of Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake, “Hail to the Chief” is attributed to English composer James Sanderson. The melody was based on an old Gaelic air, and the song was first performed in the United States in 1812. It was not until 1829 that the first documented performance of the music in the presence of the President of the United States occurred. On May 29, 1829, the Marine Band performed at the ceremony celebrating the laying of the cornerstone for the first lock on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. As President Andrew Jackson departed the ceremony, the Marine Band performed "Hail to the Chief" in his honor. Newspapers reported that the music elicited three spontaneous outbursts of acclamation for the President from the crowd in attendance. Two First Ladies are credited with first instructing the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” at a Presidential appearance. Julia Tyler, the vivacious young second wife of President John Tyler, was an amateur composer. The Tylers entertained frequently and it was at these parties that she reportedly asked the Marine Band to announce the President’s arrival by performing “Hail to the Chief.” First Lady Sara Polk is also credited with using “Hail to the Chief” to announce the arrival of the President. President James. K. Polk was an unassuming man of slight stature, and his arrival at large functions frequently went unnoticed. To avoid this embarrassment, Mrs. Polk reportedly asked the Marine Band to play “Hail to the Chief” to announce him. Over the years this tradition continued, and in 1954 the Department of Defense established an official policy making “Hail to the Chief” a musical tribute to the President of the United States. On March 11, 2018, the Marine Band presented a Living History program titled Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band Tribute. The program told the story of the talented and adventurous women who served our country in a most unique and unprecedented manner. Author of the book Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women’s Military Bands During World War II, Dr. Jill Sullivan served as a guide through the personal accounts of those very women who blazed a trail for many to follow. The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Band of Camp Lejeune was established under the watch of “The President’s Own” to support bond drives and was active during World War II from 1943–45. In 1944, the ensemble even sat in for one of the Marine Band’s popular “Dream Hour” broadcasts, a program that will be reenacted in its entirety as part of this concert. The performance took place in Schlesinger Concert Hall at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Va. Conducted by Capt. Michelle A. Rakers. Louis Saverino, March of the Women Marines. President Obama is now at the forefront of the country for a second term — and, as it turns out, at the forefront of his second inaugural parade, a tradition dating back to 1789. The parade has just begun, and features a staggering 8,800 people, roughly 200 animals, and dozens of floats — not to mention the president himself, front and center. If you're planning on attending or just want more information on who's marching today, check out our coverage of the parade route here. Here's who you can see in today's parade, in the order that they are marching: The Presidential Escort: a military and civilian formation that escorts the president, vice president, and their families from the Capitol to the White House following the swearing-in ceremony. "God Bless the USA". This 450 member college marching band was made up of college musicians from most every state in the nation. This selection is from the Washington Gala which was one of the first events held during inauguration week. Mac Davis, the featured singer, is joined by the band half way through the selection. Incidentally, this was the year the Presidential parade was cancelled because of the extreme cold. The band was under the Dr. Art Bartner the marching band director of the University of Southern California. Other staff members included Ken Dye the Director of Bands at the University of Notre Dame.
