Gabriel Medina is less than 24 hours away from the biggest showdown of his life – the fight for his second World Title. It’s a three-horse race between Gabe, Julian Wilson and Filipe Toledo, and Gabriel is leading the pack. The result here at Pipeline will come down to Gabe… it’s all on him. The Title hangs in his performance over the next two weeks. In the week leading up to the Pipe Masters, we documented Gabriel’s life – both at the Rip Curl Pipe House and in the water at Pipe and OTW. Join us behind the scenes, and witness how a man prepares to win a World Title… again. Relaxed. Confident. Happy. #VaiMedina

http://tct.volcom.com WORLD-CLASS LOWER TRESTLES NEW HOME OF THE VOLCOM TOTALLY CRUSTACEOUS TOUR GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Jan. 8, 2015 – This summer, Volcom Stone's Totally Crustaceous Tour (TCT) Global Championships will find itself at a new home on the famed cobblestone point break of Lower Trestles. On June 22 and 23, the final two days of the 15th annual event will culminate at the world-class wave, notoriously consistent in the summer months, young up-and-coming surfers from around the world will get the opportunity of a lifetime: to surf an empty and coveted line up while chasing $25,000 in cash and prizes. "At Volcom we believe it is important to have our major surfing events in world-class waves and we are thrilled to host the 2015 TCT Global Championships at Lower Trestles," said Brad Dougherty, Vice President of Volcom Surf. "This wave has a deep-rooted history of memorable surfing events and we are excited for the youth of the TCT to converge at one of the most rippable waves on earth for a shot at the Volcom 2015 TCT Global Championship title." Homegrown out of Volcom's backyard at Newport Beach’s 54th Street break, the Volcom TCT began as a fun, free and sometimes raucous event for the kids dating back to the mid-90s. While staying true to the character of TCT and continuing to Let the Kids Ride Free, the past two decades have seen this event grow organically into a full-scale international tour, giving young surfers of all ages and abilities an opportunity to get their feet wet in competitive surfing. This season, 250 surfers have qualified for the Volcom TCT Global Championships through regional tour stops, and international qualifiers including Brazil, Australia, Latin America, Japan, New Zealand, Europe, USA, Indonesia, South Africa, and Puerto Rico. Some of the best surfers in the world today, including current World Champion Gabriel Medina and World Tour surfers Nat Young, Kolohe Andino, Josh Kerr and Dusty Payne have competed on the Volcom TCT throughout their youth, and this season the event will display a new crop of up-and-comers climbing the ranks into their young professional careers. In addition to providing a major platform to showcase this exciting crew of young talent, moving the event forward into June now aligns it with two other prestigious amateur championships: the Surfing America USA Championships and the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships. These three back-to-back contests give the possibility for qualified competitors in all three championships, a chance to win a trifecta title. To top it off, the Volcom TCT Championship event at Trestles gives Volcom the incredible opportunity to partner with California State Parks on sustainability initiatives they stand behind, along with their philosophy to efficiently preserve and protect California’s natural resources. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements and the live webcast at volcom.com! This is a Video Blog update for the Ocean Beach World Tour 2011. Gabriel Medina wins Ripcurl Pro Ocean Beach ASP World Title Event No. 10 of 11 Ocean Beach, California November 1st -- 7th, 2011 The 2011 World Tour event in Ocean Beach, San Francisco produced some large waves and historic action. The contest wave size was a solid 3-5 foot plus. The conditions ranged from good to tricky. The water temp was very cold. Just days before the contest began there was also a shark attack at the same beach. Kelly Slater was entering the contest with enough points earned to grip his 11th world tour title sometime during this event, with one world tour event still remaining. The intensity was at an all time high. On the first day of the competition (11/1/2011) Rippers like Kelly Slater, Adriano De Souza, and Gabriel Medina won their heats. Dusty Payne exited the contest after spotting a shark in the line up. "I was sitting out there and saw something in the lineup," Payne said. "I've seen dolphins before and that wasn't a dolphin. That's the biggest fin I've ever seen in my life and it came straight for me. The waves are terrible so I just opted to stay in instead of deal with the shark.". Then on 11/2/2001 ASP makes a historic calculation error. ASP announced that Kelly Slater had won the 2011 season title prematurely. Kelly Accepted the honor only to have it taken away. Kelly Slater went on to officially win the title on 11/6/2011. By the end of the contest, it was Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina that won the Ocean Beach World Tour event 2011. Gabriel Medina is only 17 years of age but has been earning respect on the World Tour. Epic Surf News December 2014 Hello and Thank you for joining Pro Surf Blog for this Epic Surf News Update for December 2014. -Sunset beach pic by ASP/ Sloane 2014 -Dusty Payne at Sunset beach pic by ASP / Sloane 2014 I am gonna kick off the month on December 2nd with the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, Oahu. This event went into the Round of 96 in double-over-head + waves. -Michel Bourez Image by ASP / Kelly Cetari 2014 And although we had the Hawaiian surfer Dusty Payne continue to find his way to the finals of this event, It was the Tahitian, Michel Bourez that won the Sunset Beach competition on December 5th. This is event is the 2nd event in the Triple Crown of Surfing. After a lazy-day with solid swell in the water, the Pipe Masters event got underway on December 9th, 2014. Location: Banzai Pipeline, Oahu's North Shore, Hawaii Holding period: December 8th - 20th, 2014 -Nic Lamb Victory Image: ASP/Poullenot 2014 Nothing but Pure Stoke coming from Nic Lamb after Bombing in on 30-40 foot waves and winning the Punta Galea Big Wave Challenge on December 11th, 2014. Then on the 13th, we posted the "ASP Pipe Masters Overlapping Heat Format". Woe, so my eyes glazed over when the intel started with "Article 120". The only thing I know is that I have some distant memory of The Hawaiians, Kelly Slater, and others coming up with a solution for Hawaiian competitions that was intended to minimize the amount of unridden waves. Good chance that I am incorrect about the history of this format but what I can say is that it is confusing for the viewer and creates some complications in the line up at a reef-point. So here is my 2-cents, scrap this format for a 4-man heat vs 2-overlapping 2-man-heats. The other options would be to allow 2-people per heat in more rounds, conceding that there will be some unridden waves. -Kelly Slater Drop In by ASP / Cestari 2014 But either way these rules DO NOT STOP Kelly Slater from dropping in like a beast. Slater who was injured and still ripping at the 2014 Pipe Masters was also in contention for the 2014 season title. PipeMasters Roster and Entrance Banner pics by George Suh 2014 By December 14th the competitor list was beginning to shrink. The swell was huge and unruly so the comp experienced some lazy-days. Meanwhile in Cali, Oside was showing a pulse as well. Check out a few moments of a surf check from December 15th, 2014 and then we will get back to the news. Swimmer Art by Halele'a and Kelly Keane 12/16/2014 With our focus on Hawaii, check this out. Halele'a's Art Gallery, in Koloa, Kauai, posted this awesome artistic perspective of a swimmer by Kelly Keane. We had to reshare for our surf-art fans. Then on the 19th of December, Gabriel Medina earned enough points to be crowned as the 2014 World Tour Season Champion. This happened during Medina's quarter-final heat at Pipe. The Brazilian Storm is Here and it looks like Gabriel Medina is at the Eye-of-the-Storm. And guess who's back? It Julian Wilson with the win at the PipeMasters also on December 19th, 2014 over the newly crowned Season Champion, Gabriel Medina. Not only did Julian Wilson win the Pipe Masters but he was also the overall winner of the Triple Crown. Pulses continued to hit the California Coast so we did another surf check at San Elijo State Beach on December 20th, 2014. Check out a minute of footage from that day and we will return to wrap up the last piece of news for December. And every great finish deserves an epic new beginning. An announcement on December 22nd by the World Surf league divulged the Roster for the 2015 WSL World Championship Tour! Check out the line up for next season and look out for "My Picks" in an upcoming video. Thanks for watching our December 2014 Surf News edition. Trestles World Tour Event Lazy Day - Lowers Highlights The 2014 competition had begun but on the 4th day of the event window ASP, The Association of Surfing Professionals, put the competition on hold. Reason: Conditions of the surf... But from what you see in this video the conditions were definitely contestable. Pros Surf Trestles on a Lazy Day in 2014 including: John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Sally Fitzgibbons, and possibly Johanne Defay. Even though the competition was on hold, professional surfers were seeking some needed practice at this rock-reef point break in Southern California. The waves were glassy, had off-shore winds blowing, gave long longs through to the inside section. Pretty much perfect Trestles. You will see pros busting airs, getting barrels, throwing huge sprays, and driving down the line during this dawn-patrol surf session at Lowers. John John surfs Trestles, Gabriel Medina surfs Trestles, and Sally Fitzgibbons surfs Trestles at the same time. John John works with the a smaller peak at Middles. Style isn't just beautiful. It's lethal. Ask every surfer who's ever lost a heat to Steph Gilmore. Stephanie has been lauded for her smooth, elegant surfing for years - and all the while she's used beautiful lines, elegant maneuvers, and that artistic sensibility to absolutely destroy the competition en route to six World Titles. This year, she's chasing her 7th. And if she can outshine one of the most talented fields of surfers ever assembled - Gilmore will be tied for the most Women's Titles in history. It all starts at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast, March 11. Epic Surf Lashes Day 6 At Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Epic surf and the worlds up-and-coming junior surf stars produced an unforgettable day at the 2010 edition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in New Zealand today. And what a show it was. With only two days to go in the prestigious tournament, competitors hit their straps, shredding apart the barrelling 6-8ft (1.5-2m) waves that marched through for day six of competition at Piha Beach. USA surfing sensation Kolohe Andino dealt with the pressure in a consummate fashion, setting the standard for the day with both the highest individual wave score (9.25) and two-wave heat total (18.00) in his main event round four Under 16 boys heat. The skilful natural foot continued on with the form he displayed in the opening rounds, backhand blasting the peeling lefthanders to beat fellow USA surfers Parker Coffin and Trevor Thorton and Tahitian Tefaafana Ariihoe. Final scores: Andino (18.00), Coffin (14.00), Ariihoe (10.65) and Thorton (9.00). The waves looked kind of hard out there, said Andino. The waves had a lot of wall and it was howling offshore, and not like anything I surf back home. But a bomb wave come through when I paddled out and it set up a good heat for me. It worked out pretty good for me. Andino, 15, added hes not getting ahead of himself heading into the business end of competition. The contest has really just started for me, he said. There are so many rounds and its really hard to get to the finals. Im just going to take it heat by heat and make every heat count. I just want to make it through. Joining Andino as main event round four Under 16 boys heat winners included Austral! ian Matt Banting and Hawaiian Koa Smith. South African surfer Beyrick De Vries rose to the occasion in his blue ribbon, main event round four Under 18 boys heat, taking down Portugals Fredericko Morais and the Brazilian pairing of Gabriel Medina and Jesse Mendes. In a heat marked by interferences, De Vries stuck to himself to amass a heat-winning 15.00 total. The Brazilian duo of Medina and Mendes both scored interferences in the heat to be relegated to the repecharge round. Its always nice to get through a heat, said De Vries. Especially to win gives my confidence levels a little boost. Im feeling good. Post heat, De Vries said he steered clear of his fellow competitors in the action-packed affair. At this point of an event everyone wants it so bad, he said. Its so close; you can just smell the finals. People are willing to do anything to w! in. I just stayed away from my fellow competitors and tried to do my own thing. Tahitis double act of Tamaora McComb and Jocelyn Poulou also tasted victory, taking line honours in their main event round four Under 18 boys heat. Frenchman Dimitri Ouvre, who resides in Reunion Island, impressed the large crowd that gathered with his classy tube riding skills in his repercharge four Under 16 boys heat. In a barrel-fest of a heat, Ouvre weaved through the belly of two Piha tubes to take the heat with the days second highest combined heat total (17.90). Ouvre netting an 8.25 and 9.00 to defeat Spains Kosme Molera and Hawaiian Kaimana Jaquias. This was probably one of the best heats of my life, said Ouvre. I wanted to get out there again. It was unbelievable. New Zealands hopes remain with Sarah Mason (Cabarita, Aus), Ben Poulter (Raglan) and Ale! x Dive (Mt Maunganui) after all three surfers progressed through their heats today. Mason won her sudden-death repercharge round five Under 18 girls heat, Poulter progessed through his main event round five Under 16 boys heat, while Dive took line honours in his repercharge round five Under 18 boys heat. Team Australia celebrated their national day with a mixed bag of results. Lennox Heads Tyler Wright and Triggs Felicity Palmateer followed in the footsteps of Banting to remain in contention in the Under 18 girls division.

Epic Surf News - Pipe Masters Surfing Contest, Surf Art, and San Clemente Hello and Thank you for joining Pro Surf Blog for this Epic Surf News Update for December 18th, 2017. Surfing News I want to kick off this news segment with some surf art I came across on Saturday (December 16th). This artist clearly puts her skills to work for the forces of good. I am going to give you a little story while we check these out... Waves were fun on Friday. I do have to admit that I got in the rotation at the Jetty in Oceanside and blew it. The waves were not that consistent so you had to wait for the right wave. Once the wave or 2 came everyone in the line up would watch the person that took it. So my wave finally came and I mis timed the first turn and lost the wave’s energy and fell. You could hear the gasps and moans. So I used a little etiquette and gave the rotation a break by sitting a little inside and aiming for the mid sized waves. It can happen. Have fun with it if possible. On Saturday (December 16th) I headed up north to San Onofre State Beach to meet up with some friends at “Old Man’s”. On Sunday (December 17th) the Pipe Masters resumed with Ian Gouveia beating Filipe Toledo at Pipe. It was a Round-2 heat so Filipe was eliminated from the event. The Pipe Masters continued to run on Monday (December 18th). First things first. Did you see the Gabriel Medina / Kelly Slater drama? Medina had priority but was hanging out down the line with the intent to block Kelly Slater if a wave came. Slater took off on a wave, got barreled, and pulled out to an abrupt end of the wave. Medina dropped in but didn't try to take the wave he actually dropped straight in and even turned back toward Slater. I would say it was uncalled for. He could have just ridden the wave but he was actually trying to get a two for one. He wanted to block Slater’s wave but also get a penalty on Slater if he could make it looked like Slater hindered his score. The only problem is that it was a dangerous tactic that could have injured one or both surfers. So a bit too Machiavellian for my taste. You see similar tactics in free-surfs and let’s just say you wouldn't categorize the surfer who does this as a “Positive Vibe Warrior”. To be fair I heard people frowning on Kelly Slater’s double shaka as “bad sportsmanship”. John John Florence ended up earning of season points to win the 2017 World Championship Tour before the Pipe Masters event concluded. John John went on to the Pipe Masters Finals but could not beat Jeremy Flores. Jeremy Flores took the 2017 Billabong Pipe Masters title. WIth all the awards being handed out, we cannot forget Griffin Colapinto who won the 2017 Triple Crown of Surfing. Griffin Colapinto had to charge at 3 Hawaiian surfing contest to win this title. Now for the real news. My Pipe Masters Fantasy surfing picks were the worst in my league. I did pick John John for the win, but so did everybody. The Epic Surf News Fantasy Surfing award goes to Michele. Michele whupped us and had a significant gap in points too. So congrats to Michele. I will be setting up another league in 2018 search for on the World Surf League website or message us your email and we can send you an invite. Every Heat, Backstage Clips, Highlight Videos, Photos and much more... http://quiksilverlive.com/profrance2011/ Event No. 8 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Quiksilver Pro France rampaged through 12 heats of competition today that saw a number of upsets as well as impressive performances by the event's top seeds. Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, posted a convincing win over wildcard Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR), 17, in Round 3 of competition. The iconic Floridian was all business for his midday bout, closely analyzing the conditions and posting the highest heat total of the day, a 16.90 out of a possible 20, for an impressive display of backhand surfing. "I was nervous before the heat because there have been a few that have been slow and guys haven't been getting waves," Slater said. "I started loosening up there at the end. With the tide changing, I was somewhat confident that the lefts would begin offering better scoring opportunities and that's where I got my two best waves." The past three events have seen the historic exchange between Slater and young Australian Owen Wright (AUS), 21. The two have made the last three, consecutive Finals (an ASP first) and have ignited one of the greatest ASP World Title races in recent years. "I've always known Owen (Wright) to be building up and building up," Slater said. "By the way people talk, I'm stoked to still be standing. These young guys are incredible. The stuff that Dane (Reynolds), Jordy (Smith), Julian (Wilson) and Owen do is amazing. When I was younger, I was always looking up to the older guys and now I'm looking to the younger guys to see what kind of lines they're taking." Wright wasted no time in the final heat of the day, smashing a 7.00 and an 8.17 in the opening minutes to dispatch of Tiago Pires (PRT), 31, and advance through to Round 4, setting up another thrilling chapter in the hunt for the 2011 ASP World Title.

WSL PURE teamed up with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii and Vans to make the 2017 Hawaiian Pro more ocean-friendly. From biofuel-powered generators to waste diversion to single-use plastic reduction, we looked for ways to lessen the event's impact on the environment. These initiatives map to BIG global issues. Plastics are made from oil and are a lead pollutant in our oceans, and reducing or eliminating single-use bottles and diverting waste to the right places can make a big impact if we all take part. That's our aim here in Hawaii." -Kaipo Guerrero For more, visit: http://www.worldsurfleague.com/pure #WSL Subscribe to the WSL for more action: https://goo.gl/VllRuj Watch all the latest surfing action of the world's best surfers in the world's best waves. http://www.epictv.com It's a showdown you couldn't WRITE. Mick Fanning is four waves away from the WORLD TITLE, and Kelly Slater is six waves away. If Kelly Slater wins it ill be the biggest win of his career - which is saying a lot. 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship Gets Underway In New Zealand It was lights, camera and action for the worlds greatest junior event for under 18 year old surfers, with the 2010 edition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship getting underway in New Zealand. After a moving opening ceremony full of traditional New Zealand culture in Aucklands Mission Bay yesterday, contest organizers opted to run the opening rounds of the Under 18 (Podium 2) and Under 16 (Podium 1) boy's heats in rising 4 ft (1-1.2m) beach break conditions. The days action representing the first time that teams from Indonesia, Vanuatu and Fiji competed in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship. Indonesia Team Coach and Manager Tipi Jabrick said he was proud to be leading Team Indonesia into their maiden ISA junior event. Were really excited, especially for the kids, said Jabrick. Its a really good experience for them, but its not easy for us to travel here. Hopefully we can continue competing in the juniors and the other ISA events. Jabrick had reason to smile with Jeren Kiring progressing in second place behind the USAs Jake Halstead in heat six of the U/16 boys division. He trumped local surfer Elliot Paerata-Reid causing one of todays biggest upset. Were really happy because one of our surfers made it, said Jabrick. Hopefully thats going to encourage the other boys to do well. Because if one kid makes it, the other boys want to. Jabrick added that Fiji and Vanuatus inclusion into the prestigious tournament spurred the Indonesian team to compete. If they could do it, why couldnt Indonesia do it, he said. Its going to make a better future for the ISA Junio! r events with lesser known surfing countries taking part. Host team New Zealand couldnt have a asked for a better start in the Under 16 boys with Raglan upstart Ben Poulter (Ragland, NZL) taking line honors in heat four. It was a bit messy out there, said Poulter. Three feet, but that suits us Kiwis as weve been training here for the event. Its quite an honor to be competing for New Zealand for the second time. Australian Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW, Aus) kicked off his countrys team title defense in style on the main podium. He netted one of the highest two-wave combined heat total, 14.75 (out of a possible 20) to easily defeat the Portugal pairing of Vasco Ribeiro and Miguel Blanco in heat two of the Under 16 boys. The talented natural foot looked in total control from the opening siren, bagging a 6.75 and an 8.00 to breeze through to qualifying round two. &ld! quo;Just to get the win was good for my confidence, said Banting. Theres a lot of pride surfing for Australia as weve won for the past four years. Theres a bit if pressure as well, but Australia is the team to watch. Im stoked to be in it. Other Australians who progressed in round two today included Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen), Creed McTaggart (Margaret River) and Jake Scott (Malabar) in the Under 16 boys, as well as Tim MacDonald (North Stradbroke Island), Thomas Woods (Coolangatta) and Jordi Watson (Currarong). Another standout performance was from lone Italian surfer Leo Fioravanti, who bested South Africas Steven Sawyer, Frances Andy Criere and Mexicos Jimel Corzo in his round one Under 16 boys heat. The Under 18 Boys kicked off their campaigns on podium two today, with several high-scoring heat wins from a whos who of the worlds top juniors includ! ing newly crowned ASP World Pro Junior champion Maxime Huscenot (FRA), Brazils Gabriel Medina, 2009 ISA Junior World champion Keanu Asing from Hawaii, and the USAs Conner Coffin. Competition is expected to continue tomorrow with a rising swell expected to lash Piha over the coming days. Volcom Fiji Pro Day 4 - Three Perfect 10 Point Rides as Restaurants fires for round three and four. Following one of the greatest big wave surfing days in history, at the world famous Cloudbreak, The Volcom Fiji Pro resumed this morning in quality four to six foot waves at Restaurants, the fringe reef off the island of Tavarua. Australians Bede Durbidge and Taj Burrow kicked off Round 3 with both surfers executing deep barrel rides and vertical backside re-entrys, a sure sign of the day of surfing to come. In a cruel twist of fate, Bede's heroics of the previous day counted for nothing as he was dispensed from the event by an on-fire Burrow. As the day progressed, the wave quality improved with every heat and the world's best surfers lifted the bar. Standouts included Damien Hobgood (USA), Mick Fanning (AUS), Gabriel Medina (BRZ) Joel Parkinson (AUS), Kelly Slater (USA), Heitor Alves (BRZ), and Owen Wright (AUS). But the highlight of Round three came when sentimental event favorite CJ Hobgood scored the days first perfect 10, a deep draining double up barrel followed by a fearless floater above the razor sharp coral. As the event then moved into the non-elimination Round 4, it was almost as if perfect rides were growing on the coconut palms that surround Tavarua. First John John Florence made his intentions for this event, and perhaps a rookie year World Title clear by threading one of the set waves of the day through the entire length of the inside reef for a 10 point ride. Then a heat later 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater answered the youngster with an impossible line through six folding sections only to emerge to unanimous 10's from the judges. Australia's Owen Wright, who surfed against Kelly, would have won any other heat in the entire event but will now have to surf Round 5 tomorrow.
