In celebration of the Marine Band's 215th anniversary, John Williams, the Academy Award-winning composer and conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, conducted the band in a fanfare he wrote specifically for the ensemble's anniversary. The work is aptly titled "For 'The President's Own.'" On July 3, 2013, the band rehearsed with Mr. Williams and recorded the new band work. Following the recording session, Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn talked with Mr. Williams about the piece and his experience working with "The President's Own." Williams has a special relationship with "The President's Own," having conducted the group on its 2003 and 2008 anniversary concerts in Washington, D.C., and in 2009 during a tour concert at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. https://www.tierolff.nl/oodles-of-noodles.html James “Jimmy” Dorsey (February 29th 1904 – June 12th 1957), also known as “JD,” was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and trumpet player. He composed many famous songs, including It’s The Dreamer In Me, I’m Glad There Is You, and, together with Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Frances Langford, Pennies From Heaven. In Oodles Of Noodles the spotlight is on the alto saxophone soloist. The solo is written-out, but we encourage players to add their own interpretation to it. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Lieutenant Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ Other than the fact that Sousa’s “thunderer” was undoubtedly a Mason, his identity may never be revealed. “The Thunderer” march was dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and it was composed on the occasion of the Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. The conclave was held in October 1889 and was sponsored by Columbia Commandery No. 2. Sousa had been “knighted” in that organization three years earlier. “The Thunderer” was Mrs. John Philip Sousa’s favorite march. This was revealed by their daughter Helen, who also surmised that the “thunderer” might have been her father’s salute to the London Times, which was known as “the thunderer.” It has since been determined that Sousa probably had no association with the newspaper at that time, however. The “thunderer” might have been one of the men in charge of making arrangements for the 1889 conclave–in particular, Myron M. Parker, who worked tirelessly to make the event the spectacular success that it was. Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 89. The 17th Marine Band Director John Philip Sousa earned his famous moniker by perfecting the form and performance of the American march. But how are Sousa’s miniature masterpieces actually put together and what are the elements of performance that make his marches so special? Most of the featured selections are drawn from the Marine Band’s ongoing recording project, “The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa.” Material is available free online and you are encouraged to use your laptops, tablets, or smartphones to view the edited full scores and follow along during the clinic. The program was narrated by Dr. Patrick Warfield: http://www.music.umd.edu/faculty/music_directory/musicology_and_ethnomusicology/patrick_warfield. This clinic was presented at The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic on Dec. 15, 2016 Clinic Program: http://www.marineband.marines.mil/Portals/175/Docs/sousa_march_clinic_handout.pdf?ver=2016-12-13-160014-693 The Complete Marches of John Phillip Sousa: http://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/

Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ The only clue to the existence of this unpublished march was a mention in the list of compositions given in Sousa’s autobiography, Marching Along, until manuscripts turned up in a trunk in the basement archives of the Sands Point home in 1965. Several copyist’s manuscripts for band bearing the names of U.S. Marine Band musicians were found. Marine Corps enlistment records of these men are incomplete, so establishing an exact date for the composition is improbable unless other manuscripts are some day discovered. Inasmuch as it was written while Sousa was leader of the Marine Band, it would seem that it would have been written during the homeward leg of one of the Marine Band tours (1891 and 1892) or perhaps on the return from the engagement in Fayetteville, North Carolina (1889). Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 62. Used by permission.
