(25 Apr 2018) ANDY SERKIS AND BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH DISCUSS THEIR 'JUNGLE BOOK' ADAPTATION, 'MOWGLI' Andy Serkis could've done without a trip to Las Vegas' CinemaCon this week. The British director was on hand to promote "Mowgli" - his live-action reimaging of Rudyard Kipling classic "The Jungle Book." "We are 10 days away, 10 days away from finishing," smiled Serkis. "We had to break off to come talk about it, sort of just slightly before the final hurdle you know?" Serkis was joined in Sin City by actor Benedict Cumberbatch who will provide vocal work for Bengal tiger Shere Khan. "It's seamless between live action, between real environments, between the jungle, the water, and this extraordinary rendition of our performances and animated creatures," said the British actor. "The creatures are very much... It's all nearer Kipling's intentions. It's, the creatures carry the spirit of the jungle with them and they're not shiny, pristine creatures who burst into song. These are animals and their animal nature is pretty laid bare, pretty open and honest and yeah, they don't mess around." The title character will be portrayed by American Rohan Chand, with a jungle of CGI animals voiced by the likes of Serkis himself (Baloo), Christian Bale (Bagheera), Cate Blanchett (Kaa) and Peter Mullan (Akela). The movie is scheduled to hit cinemas in October 2018, just two years after Jon Favreau's box office-topping "The Jungle Book." "It's a familiar story," admitted Serkis, "but, as with all classic pieces of writing, the interpretation is everything and this I feel is probably closest to Rudyard Kipling's book that was written at the turn of the century, 19th century. It is very much located in Indian culture as a big Indian cast." "In fact, you see a lot of Mowgli not only in the village, in the jungle, being raised as a feral child, as wolf with animals but also trying to negotiate how to become a human." Mowgli: Andy Serkis Interview After years of development, filming and an extensive post-production process, it's finally time to check out Andy Serkis' feature film rendition of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. In Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, Rohan Chand leads as the title character, a young boy who's grown up in the wild amongst a pack of wolves. While Mowgli loves the company of his jungle family which also includes the panther Bagheera (Christian Bale) and the bear Baloo (Serkis), the increasing threat of the tiger Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) leads the group to question whether Mowgli is really part of the pack or not. We've seen feature adaptations of The Jungle Book before, but Serkis strives to do something different by telling a story that isn't for young kids but rather takes a more grounded, gritty approach to the source material. Serkis further sets his production apart from past interpretations by doing what he does best - striving to incorporate and enhance performance capture techniques. With Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle hitting Netflix on December 7th, I recently got the chance to sit down with Serkis and dish out my two burning questions; why does The Jungle Book deserve multiple big screen interpretations and what's his take on the rise of the "virtual production"? Mowgli: Rohan Chand Interview You're going to want to watch out for Rohan Chand. The young actor has already starred opposite Jason Bateman in Bad Words and appeared in other films including Lone Survivor and The Hundred-Foot Journey, but his performance in Andy Serkis' Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is undeniable proof; Chand is downright phenomenal, and can absolutely command the screen and lead a movie. He takes the title role in Serkis' adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic, The Jungle Book, stepping in as a young boy who loses his parents and is instead raised by a pack of wolves in the jungle where a tiger named Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) threatens their survival. The role of Mowgli is a challenging one all on its own, but adding to the complexity of this particular production, Chand had to film many scenes twice to accommodate the combination of performance capture work and real locations. I recently got the chance to sit down with Chand and he was kind enough to break down the whole process for me and to tell me about working with Serkis, this incredible ensemble, the physical training required to be able to run with the wolves, and loads more. You can catch all of that in this video interview. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is available to watch right now on Netflix.
