As a part of the American Bandmasters Association 2017 convention, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band will present a free concert that is open to the public. The concert will showcase a diverse program of classic band repertoire and exciting new works by living composers. Attendees will be treated to works by “The March King” John Philip Sousa; a transcription world première of Jacques Offenbach’s Overture to the Moon; a movement from the Marine Band’s most recent commission, Symphony No. 2, Voices, by James Stephenson; and John Mackey’s Frozen Cathedral, a portrait of Alaska’s majestic icy peak of Denali. In keeping with a programming tradition instilled by Sousa, the concert will also feature virtuoso soloists: the Marine Band’s baritone vocalist Master Sgt. Kevin Bennear will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel and Ryan Anthony, principal trumpet of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will perform Peter Meechan’s Songs of Hope, a piece dedicated to Anthony following his diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. This event is FREE but ticketed. Limit is 4 tickets per request and seating is general admission. Doors will open 45 minutes prior to performance (7:15 pm). All patrons must be seated at least 15 minutes before the performance. Tickets are valid until 7:45 pm. Unclaimed seats will be released at 7:45 pm to non-ticketed patrons. Please allow sufficient time for parking and entry so that you may be seated by 7:45 pm. In celebration of the Marine Band's 215th anniversary, John Williams, the Academy Award-winning composer and conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, conducted the band in a fanfare he wrote specifically for the ensemble's anniversary. The work is aptly titled "For 'The President's Own.'" On July 3, 2013, the band rehearsed with Mr. Williams and recorded the new band work. Following the recording session, Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn talked with Mr. Williams about the piece and his experience working with "The President's Own." Williams has a special relationship with "The President's Own," having conducted the group on its 2003 and 2008 anniversary concerts in Washington, D.C., and in 2009 during a tour concert at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ When played for the first time by Sousa’s Band in Philadelphia’s Academy of Music on April 21, 1899, “many feet were beating a tattoo.” The band was obliged to repeat it three times. “Hands Across the Sea” was off to a good start, and it has since remained a standard in band literature. The march was addressed to no particular nation, but to all of America’s friends abroad. It has been suggested that Sousa was inspired by an incident in the Spanish-American War, in which Captain Chichester of the British Navy came to the support of Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay. A second (and more likely) source is a line by Frere, which was printed on the front cover of the sheet music: “A sudden thought strikes me—let us swear an eternal friendship.” The line by Frere apparently appeared in a play which Sousa read. In answering questions sent to him while serving in the navy, he gave this account in the Great Lakes Recruit of March, 1918: After the Spanish war there was some feeling in Europe anent our republic regarding this war. Some of the nations...thought we were not justified while others gave us credit for the honesty of our purpose. One night I was reading an old play and I came across this line, “A sudden thought strikes me,—let us swear an eternal friendship.” That almost immediately suggested the title “Hands Across the Sea” for that composition and within a few weeks that now famous march became a living fact. Paul E. Bierley, The Works of John Philip Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 60. Used by permission. US Marine Corps playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL30D6441B8129D970 more at http://quickfound.net/links/military_news_and_links.html "Director of the United States Marine Band Lt. Col. William F. Santelmann provides viewers with a musical history of the Marine Band. He conducts several musical compositions from a number of time periods and showcases the antique instruments used in their performance." Produced by the US Naval Photographic Center. United States Marine Corps film MH-8058 Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Band The United States Marine Band is the premier band of the United States Marine Corps. Established by act of Congress on July 11, 1798, it is the oldest of the United States military bands and the oldest professional musical organization in the United States. Today, the Marine Band also includes the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Marine Chamber Ensembles. The Marine Band is entirely separate from its sister military band, the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps ("The Commandant's Own") and the 10 active duty Marine Corps field bands. The Marine Band has been uniquely known as "The President's Own" since 1801 because of its historic connection to the President of the United States. The relationship between the Marine Band and the White House began on New Year's Day 1801, when President John Adams invited the band to perform at the Executive Mansion. Later that year, Thomas Jefferson initiated the tradition of Marine Band performances by requesting that it perform at his inauguration. The Marine Band has played at every United States presidential inauguration since. President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own" in 1801. Today, the Marine Band performs in approximately 500 events every year including state funerals, state arrival ceremonies, state dinners, parades, concerts, and other social events. The Marine Band also travels across the country each October and November during its fall concert tour, a tradition that began in 1891 under its most famous director, composer John Philip Sousa... The Marine Band recruits experienced musicians; members are selected through a rigorous audition procedure and must satisfy additional security and physical requirements to be eligible. Selected band members serve under a four-year contract as active duty enlisted Marines and are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and physical standards. They are the only members of the United States Armed Forces not required to undergo recruit training and do not perform combat missions. Also, they are not assigned to any unit other than the Marine Band. The band members start at the rank of Staff Sergeant, and wear rank insignia with a lyre replacing the normal crossed rifles. Commissioned officers are drawn from the band, although drum majors are career Marines and are selected from Fleet Marine Force bands, as they are responsible for the military development of the band's members. As of 2010, the USMC spends about $10 million annually to support the band...
